I don' t know that Garvey understands how Cole is feeling, but you can definitely tell that he's been through all of this before. He intuitively addresses Cole's actions and doesn't hold back about what is expected of him. He notes that he doesn't have time for losers, and that he cannot extend himself without trust, which leads me to believe there have been other boys in similar circumstances.
