why are the circles important to the charaters
The circles are the essence of life. Edwin and Garvey try to teach Cole that he is a part of them. Cole wants to impose his will on other living things but Garvey and Edwin teach Cole that he must function within these circles. He must add to them rather than take away from them. An example is when Cole, beaten from the Spirit Bear, feels the need to help the baby birds that were knocked down by the wind. This is a turning point for Cole. He is beginning to understand he can be positive within his environment instead of negative.
