Why was the death of tom robinson so tragic?

Tom's incarceration was unjust, as he was innocent. Thus, his death becomes even more tragic because his intentions are deliberate. He runs away knowing the guards will shoot him, leading us to understand that Tom saw the verdict and his imprisonment as a death sentence..... the end of his life.
