Why must Jem read to Mrs. Dubose every day after school and on Saturdays?

Atticus has made reading to her Jem's punishment for cutting off her flowers. Atticus, of course, is just trying to help Jem discover who Mrs. Dubose really is as well as giving the old woman some much needed attention before she dies.
