Why does Sheriff Tate insist that Bob Ewell fell on his knife?

The intense attention Boo would get would most certainly be traumatic for the reclusive Boo. He decides to go with the story that Bob Ewell was drunk when he attacked the Finch children and fell on his own knife. Nobody would think to question that story or care that Bob Ewell is dead.
