Why does Jem cry when the hole in the tree is filled with cement?

Why does he cry when the hole in the tree that Boo supposedly did got filled with cement? was it because that the gifts then stopped?

I don't think it is because the gifts stop coming rather than Nathan Radley has cut off the connection with their phantom friend.
