Why does Atticus misread so badly the signs that Bob Ewell might try to hurt him or his family’s?

Atticus knew that Ewell was embarrassed, but he never dreamed that he had such a desire for revenge. Atticus, a good man, was unable to properly place himself in Ewell's shoes because he had no idea how the man's mind worked.
