Why does Atticus ask whether anyone called for a doctor

Atticus asks whether or not anyone had called for a doctor when Mayella had been raped because she would have required an examination. An examination would have revealed if she'd really been raped or not, as there are certain injuries that would have been sustained in the act itself.
