Why do you think Jem is so affected by the outcome of the case?

Jem is in that inbetween stage where he is still young enough to be naive..... to believe that good will always win out over evil. He is also at an age where he discovers his youthful optimism isn't going to change the reality. This reality..... it shakes his world.
