Atticus does try to change racial perceptions in Maycomb. I think the commentator claiming he didn't is wrong or missed the whole point of the novel. Atticus was up against generations of ingrained racism. He knew he would lose the Tom Robinson case but dis it anyway to show the people just how blatantly wrong racism is. The jury took a very long time to reach the guilty verdict. Mr, Cunningham changed his racist view of the case. Other whites like Mr. Underwood even wrote an article about the travesty of justice. Atticus did affect change.
