What prompts Atticus to advise Scout, "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down"?

Atticus is prompted to give Scout this advice after her fight with Cecil Jacobs. He knows that defending Tom Robinson is going to cause a stir that at times will affect his children. He wants them to stand proud and avoid the conflict..... to use their heads, not their fists.
