In his cross examination Atticus exposes the kind of life Mayella has been subjected to. Her mother is dead, and she is left to care for her siblings. Her father is a drunk, and often leaves his family without enough food, so long as he has enough liquor in his belly. Mayella attended school for a short period of time, something her siblings do not do. When asked if her father is a loving man..... Mayella hesitates and says he is "tolerable" when he isn't drinking. Most of Maycomb already knows that those times are few and far between. Lastly, we learn that Mayella has no friends..... all she has is the small patch of flowers to be proud of and love.
