What does jem's refusal to obey Atticus indicate with respect to Jem's character?

Aunt Alexandra has been teaching the children about the importance of family and the need to stick by them under all circumstances. Jem's refusal to obey Atticus ahows that he has learned this lesson and will not leave his father until he knows he's out of danger. This is a sign of maturity on Jem's part.
