What does it mean to "act responsibly"?

Certainly Atticus personifies this. Despite anger and prejudice from the community, Atticus does the responsible thing, he does the only thing that is right: he defends an innocent man against hate and bigotry. This is a catalyst for everything that Scout and Jem learn about responsibility through the story.
