What does Atticus try to do and fail at which Scout later realizes requires a woman to do properly? Why might a woman be better at it?

Atticus attempts to educate the children on social order, something he finds no credence in whatsoever. Aunt Alexandra, however, as a woman can expain what he can't because for her, it's one of the most important things the children can understand.
