What do they see the next day? Why do you think Mr. Nathan Radley told the kids that the tree was dying when Atticus says that it's perfectly healthy?

Mr. Radley simply justified cementing the knot-hole by saying the tree was dying. His real intent was stopping the communication between Boo and the Finch children.
