Why would this expression "poor but proud" fit Walter Cunningham?

This expression fits Walter Cunningham because he comes from a poor family, doesn't always have the things necessary to take care of his needs, but refuses charity when offered. An example of this would be his refusal to accept lunch money from Miss Caroline.
