What is the purpose of Miss Maudies conversation with Jem and Scout the morning after the fire.

Harper Lee uses Miss Maudie's voice to explain to the children that a smaller house and a bigger garden are just fine. It isn't the size of the house of where you live (as the novel's more racist characters would believe), but the love that matters.
