why do all the people in the gallery of the courtroom stand as Atticus walks out ? how does Scout react to this moment?

The people in the African American gallery rise when Atticus leaves to show respect for the fact that he has defended a black man who will not get justice but at least got amazing representation by a white man. Scout initially does not even realize what the gallery has done until the Rev. Sykes tells her to stand because her father is leaving.
