Scout asks Atticus what a nigger-lover is, and he says that it's just a meaningless term. He asks Scout to consider where Mrs. Dubose comes from. Her anger and ignorance are a result of a very painful life. Atticus adds that he is indeed "nigger-lover", because he does his best to love everybody.
