Atticus appeals to the Jury's sense of humanity. Atticus knows that they are all aware of Tom's innocence; they just need to do the right thing and find Tom innocent. He says that this case should never have come to trial in the first place. Atticus says that there is no circumstantial evidence that Tom beat Mayella. Atticus argues that it is Mayella, though a victim, performed the unspeakable social crime among White Southerners: she kissed a black man. Atticus finishes by pointing out that the court is America's last and best levelers. For the sanctity of the courts and all that is right, they must acquit Tom.
