Scout felt that Mr. Raymond was an evil man because he constantly drank. Scout learns, as the novel progresses, that good and evil are more often shades of each other as people try to overcome their personal daemons. We see this with the character of Mrs. Dubose as well. People have an inherent good in them, unless their name is Bob Ewell. He is an exception to Atticus's rule.
