Scout is involved in three altercations in these chapters. Two are physical, one is not. Describe each and explain their relationship to the larger context of the novel.

Scout usually gets along well with her Uncle Jack but gets in an altercation with him when she curses in front of him. Scout also attacks Jem when he lectures her on irritating Aunt Alexandra. Finally Scout attacks Francis for insulting Atticus. All of these are part of Scout's maturation process. Her feisty nature is actually one of her most compelling traits. In many ways, Scout is a less refined version of her father. Scout slowly learns that there are ways of standing up for what is "right" other than in a violent or aggressive way.
