In chapter 23, what does Atticus tell Scout about why the jury took so long to convict Tom? How is this a small victory over prejudice and racism?

Atticus is actually talking to Jem about the length of time it took the jury to make a decision. Atticus said that normally, the jury would only have taken a few minutes to bring back a guilty verdict. He saw the two hours the jury spent deliberating as promising for the future.
