“Easy does it, son,” Atticus would say. “She’s an old lady and she’s ill. You just hold your head high and be a gentleman. Whatever she says to you, it’s your job not to let her make you mad.”

I agree with Atticus' advice. In context, Atticus is referring to Mrs. Dubose.... he is asking his son to behave the way he has raised him, to treat his elders with respect, and to overlook behaviors that are caused by things he is too young to understand.
