Ms. Caroline wants to lend Walter some money for lunch. Walter is livid. Scout interrupts and explains how the Cunninghams work. Walter comes from a proud family. Although they live in relative poverty, they refuse to borrow money. I think Scout had the right idea here. She knew that Ms. Caroline was clueless about the lives of her students. Scout wanted to help both Walter and her teacher out of an awkward situation.
