In the first quote, Atticus revelas that he knows the case his hopeless.... unwinnable. Regardless, Atticus sees taking the case as his mortal duty..... something he couldn't forgive himself for if he let it pass by.
In the second quote, Link Deas warns Atticus that he has everything to lose. This included his career, his standing in the community, as well as his family's place in Maycomb.
