Tom represents what is good about humanity. Tom Robinson is a mockingbird figure: he is a symbol of innocence in a dark unfair world. He tries to help a white girl who has been taught to despise him. Although Tom is an immense and powerful man, he is kind and gentle: he is emotionally fragile to the ugliness the white world throws at him.
