How does Jem bravely protect his sister after the school play?

Jem knows their stalker isn't Cecil Jacobs, but he's pretending he thinks it is so to keep Scout calm. Jem screams at Scout to run away once he realizes the stalker is a man. Jem tries to fight the man, Bob Ewell, while Scout runs away.
