I think that when Jem cries at the trial of Tom Robinson, he is realizing that he can live in a very dark and unfair world. The injustice is just too much to take for Jem. Jem , like his father, believed in the sanctity of the court system. The court was the last bastion of civility; it was the place where things were set right. Jem witnesses the ignorance and hate of the white jury first hand. Despite overwhelming evidence Tom Robinson is still convicted. This gentle Mockingbird has been silenced in the name of racial bigotry and the court must abide by the judgment. Check out Chapter 22.
