Atticus says that, "I can't conceive of a man who'd try to kill children." Atticus,with all his experience in law, is shocked at what Bob Ewell tried to do to his kids. Atticus had previously downplayed the danger of Bob Ewell because he thought him incapable of harming children. In the end Ewell probably had this coming. Not only did he abuse his own child, he attacked Atticus's as well.
