Basically dolphus raymond uses the bag of coke as beer to give people a reason to talk, meaning they can assume how and why he married a coloured woman and has coloured children. If he just admitted to not caring about what people think about race then he would be in the same position as atticus. essentially i believe he does this so that he is not put in the same position as atticus.
