This is a huge question that would likely require a full-length essay in order to answer properly, but for the sake of a brief starting point, I'll offer this:
Scout does not have a mom. She has her father Atticus, who is very aloof (to the point that even she calls him Atticus) yet honorable. Scout learns a lot just by watching Atticus do what he does for Tom Robinson.
She is a fighter, and she seems to win the fights she starts at school. It's a technique for alleviating the pain of embarrassment and insult.
She is a reader before most of her classmates. Atticus taught her to read at a young age, which actually alienates her slower peers.
