The narrator and main character who begins her story at almost six years old. A rebellious tomboy, Scout has a fierce disposition toward any who challenge her, but at heart she believes in the goodness of people. Scout reacts to the terrible events of the book without losing hope in humanity. I think the scene when Scout faces the mob of men, ch 15, in front of the court house is important. Scout uses her goodness and innocence to diffuse the mob. She shows intelligence and compassion to make Mr. Cunningham see what he is doing. I don't think she was conscious of what she was able to do. That is perhaps why her act of kindness diffused a potentially violent situation.
