chapter 8 - creating a snow man.. help

The snowman actually brings out the theme of appearance and reality. Note that the snowman is actually create with dirt(brown) inside then coated with snow(white).

The snowman also acts as a relief to the tension and as a lesson to the children, by Atticus, that they have to respect people regardless of who they are.

I think- like hong w- it symbolises equality. The snowman is made from soil, and Scout says, and i quote; 'Jem, I ain't ever heard of a nigger snowman,' to which Jem then replies, 'He won't be black long'.

This is saying that we are all made from the same things and we are all equal, all that is seperating us is a thin layer of skin on the outside. However, we could go deeper in saying that Jem represented the Lord creating men, and all men were made the same, and then they were seperated last minute.

My final point is, that this IS true; humans were once all black, and only those who moved to colder climates adapted to get as much Vitamin D from the sun as possible- thus turning white. Useless fact there, but it shows the symbolism quite well.

Also, it signifies that the mud they use is the colored folks and the snow is the white folks. It means that the colored folks are the ones holding up the county and are ignored or unseen. where as the White folks are not ignored and are being suppored by the colored but simpaly ignore them.
