Atticus is worried about the repurcusisons of his decision to represent Tom Robinson. The people of Maycomb are racist and believe Tom is guilty without evidence simply because he is black. Atticus' defense of the man will be considered inappropriate by many. People will become angry and vindictive. He is worried for both Tom and his family. He wants to keep his children safe, no matter what they're faced with.
