To Kill a Mockingbird

Assuming Miss Stephanie’s account of Bob Ewell spitting at Atticus in chapter 23 is true, how do you explain Atticus’s decision not to defend himself? How do Scout, Jem, and Dill try to explain it? How does Atticus explain it?

In my opinion, honorable man that Atticus is...... he wouldn't stoop to Ewell's level or give him the satisfaction of a reaction.
