Though J. worries that Montmorency will get bored in the boat, they decide to bring him along anyway.

Montmorency is aggressive and belligerent and bellicose. But he cannot run around in a boat since its a confined space. This is why he wasnt very keen to come. At least this is my best way of understanding it. Hope it helps.
