Why do the three friends get together to discuss their current circumstances?

The three men are actually getting together for dinner.... it's a social gathering. Talking about their illnesses and planning a trip came about as a part of their conversation. Their purpose was not to discuss "maladies", maladies were simply a topic that came up as they waited for Mrs. Poppets to announce dinner was ready.
