Why did the men put in the potatoes into the Irish stew without peeling them ?

It took the men twenty-five minutes to peel four potatoes...... thus, they just washed and threw the rest of them into the pot.

George said it was absurd to have only four potatoes in an Irish stew, so we washed half-a-dozen or so more, and put them in without peeling.
