From the text:

George and I were for camping out. We said it would be so wild and free, so patriarchal like.

After ruminating a bit, in addition to Harris' negativity, the three decide to camp out on nice evenings and get a hotel when it rained. Jerome goes into a lengthy description of the challenges in putting up a canvas ot tent in the rain, as well as the downside when it comes to food, clothing, and tobacco.
