what was wrong with the prospect of a sea voyage?

The narrator starts out by saying, "A sea trip does you good when you are going to have a couple of months of it, but, for a week, it is wicked." Later J relates the story of his brother-in-law who paid a lot of money for meals aboard a sea cruise but was too seasick to eat them and too sick to finish the journey.
