Three men in a boat
The men, all hypochondriacs, are chatting about their latest illnesses, each man certain that he is in danger of death or serious disease. In a flashback, J. recollects how he once went to the British Museum to research a treatment for his hay fever, and after reading about diseases, convinced himself that he was suffering from every illness known to man except for housemaid’s knee.J. still believes that he suffers from every disease, but he is especially concerned about his ‘liver condition’ – the main symptom of which is, “a general disinclination to work of any kind”
The three friends were "feeling seedy" n nervous. Harries went "extra ordinary fits of giddiness" at times just as george did,Jim, the author fancied himself to have trouble with his liver. It was not a genuine problem. This is because they were not suffering from any ailment indeed. The problem they fancied actually arose from their hypochondriacy.
There were four of them namely George,Harris,Jerome and Montmorency . All of them were sitting in a room smoking and talking about how bad they were from a medical point of view. All of them were feeling seedy and they were getting quite nervous about it. Harris said that he felt such extraordinary fits of giddiness came over him at times and he hardly knew what he was doing. He also complained that he was overworked. George too complained on the same thing that he had fits of giddiness . With Jerome it was his liver that was out of order. He had been reading a patent liver pillvir circular in which were detailed the various symptoms by which a man could tell that his liver was out of order. He had all of them. Then Jerome the narrator goes back to a flashback that he remembered going to a British museum one day to read up the treatment for some slight ailment of which he had touch hay fever. He went through all the diseases. He reached the page of typhoid , read the symptoms and signs and discovered that he had typhoid. Finally the only conclusion was that all of them needed rest . They had to be relieved from their stress and had to take a break.
