These events are culturally importand to the Igbo people. The customs the author details are a part of their history, an integral part of who the people are and what they've lost through colonization and western expectations. He is drawing attention to the things Okonkwo wished to hold onto, and the reason Okonkwo fought so hard against the foreigners who came to their land. It's one thing to colonize a land, and yet something completely different when you colonize the people.
