What depict the hardships faced by women?

I'm not sure what you mean by "hardship". The narrator leads a privileged life, but like most women at that time, is limited by her gender to roles specific to women at the time. The narrator's creativity is stiffled; her skills as a housewife and mother are emphasized. John, as her husband, is responsible for making the decisions, and as a woman, she listens to the counsel of her husband.... a better word might be "obeys".
