As for the second part of your question, Balram is highly intelligent and, even though he is forced to leave school only a few years into his education, he continues to educate himself by observing the world around him and listening to the conversations of others.

Their given a few years of learning, just enough to spark their curiosity and desire to learn, and then they're told they won't be taught anything else. It's like a "half-baked" meal...... cooked on the outside and frozen on the inside.
