Why does Brian conflict with Deutsch? Is this typical?

Deutsch is Brian's rival on the football team. To put it simply, he wants Brian's position. Brian uses his membership in the Wave to justify his part in the fight..... citing that there wouldn't have been a fight had Deutsch been a part of the Wave. Brain believes that is he were a member, Brian would be more concerned with the group as a whole than his own ambition.

I wouldn't say this is typical per se, as most athletes fight for their positions on the field.
