Why did Deutsch and Brian almost get in a fight?

Brian and Deutsch are rivals, and Brian believes Deutsch is trying to steal his position on the football team. David says, “If he was in The Wave, he wouldn’t be trying to steal Brian’s position. That guy’s a real detriment to the team.” (Page 86)
