Mr. Ross required his students to stand next to their desks with appropriate posture and address him as “Mr. Ross” when answering questions. They also must bring a pencil and paper to class every day. His rules are meant to promote self-discipline in conjunction with group accountablility. Peer pressure and group expectations meant that individuality was supressed by community. Those who did not wish to be ostracized followed the rules.
