What role does the setting play in this book?

Not many details it a very general question but i was wondering what role the setting plays?

I think the setting is meant to be "anywhere America." This is to say that what takes place in the Wave could happen at most any high school in the United States. This gives the reader instant familiarity with the setting so that they can better internalize the themes.
